I was introduced to the Golden Phoenix some years ago, and while it's not much to look at (especially since currently they seem to be remodeling) don't let that put you off, it's some damn fine Chinese dining. Yesterday evening the hankering for some Chinese cuisine kicked in, and the usual local takeout, some favorite downtown place etc. discussion went on, we decide to go to Golden Phoenix since it's been a while and is a place that has had some good memories in the past. It didn't disappoint. So the line up: * Hot and Sour Soup: I've found few places that do this badly. This is indeed a good one. * Barbecued Pork Spare Ribs: Not too shabby. Little different to what I usually expect, but still really tasty. This was one of those try something we hadn't before here moments! * Tangerine Chicken: Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm. That should say enough. There's few places you can even find this, and this one did not disappoint. A good tangerine chicken is NOTHING like orange chicken. This goes into my list of two places in SLC that know how to make this! * Szechuan Pork: Well imagine taking hot and sour soup, all its ingredients but doing away with the liquid part and making it a main dish - and that explains this perfectly. And as a great lover of the hot and sour, cannot fault this in the slightest, wonderful main dish and something unique compared to its namesake elsewhere. So, food was good - an easy 3 1/2 points on that alone, but since Yelp can't do half points, well let's talk about what takes this from A-OK and a half, a bronze medal winner, to being a fan and it being a contender for a silver or even gold medal...two words.....customer service. Service from what I recall has always been good here. On this visit it was spectacular from end to end, and I observed they were just as attentive and friendly with other diners around us too. What it lacks in looks, Golden Phoenix makes up for with service and great food. Someday when I make a list of my favorite Chinese food, this will rank up with the best!

One word, ewwwwwwwwwww! For an appetizer we got short ribs. Well I bit in to one and it's still cold and icy in the middle. They were happy to take them back but all they did was char the living hell out of them (photo attached) For the main course I ordered a spicy beef dish. It was in no way spicy. The beef was an odd spongy texture and rather than being spicy it was lathered in a sweet sauce. I ate 3 bites... The brown rice and ham fried rice tasted nearly the same, except for a couple of little ham cubes. $33.00+ dollars down the drain and the only person I can blame is myself. Not sure why I didn't look at reviews first... Still kicking our selves in the rear.

if you're vegan and in salt lake and don't know about evergreen, I feel sorry for you. Everything they make is pretty awesome, but the best thing I've ever had here is their new sushi menu. Its seriously so great that you can get rolls with vegan cream cheese and vegan tempura without having to make a scene or sound like an asshole. Their simple vegi rolls are my favorite though. They make an amazing desert one too with mango, strawberries, kiwi and sweet sauce. The presentation was just beautiful and the service is usually pretty great.

If you like Chinese food this is the place in SLC. While there are many places out there are appear nicer and spend a lot of money on decor they simply do not compare when it comes to the food itself. I recently came across Golden Phoenix sort of reluctantly. I;m not generally a fan of Chinese food. However, this place changed my mind. My wife is vegetarian, I am not, but we were both impressed with the quality of the food whether it contained meat or not. We will certainly be going back in the near future.

A hidden gem that been around a long time in the valley. This is one of the places my family goes to for dinner. They have a great selection of Americanized and traditional dishes. They probably make the best Walnut Shrimp in the valley. Their Peking spare ribs are pretty tasty too. Service is pretty decent right up until you get your food then they seem to forget about you but like most Chinese places, flag them down when you need something. I just hope their interior remodel in the fall won't hurt them.

So bad! The price is not worth the food! The restutant is dirty! The manager is bad! The food teste very weried. its not the chiese food tho, kind of weried food! Very Very dirty! The hot pot is bad! they said they have lamb, but it is beef smells like lamb!! Liar! dont go the this resturant! Never!

This was one of those places that I'd heard from someone was worth going and a different friend of mine and myself happened into it randomly. The food, while overall pretty good, had a few things wrong with almost everything, except the hot and sour soup, which was quite good. Some of it had to do with likely how old the sauces for the entrees were and some of it had to do with sloppiness in the cuts of meat (down with gristle). The inside was what I would put at about average, nothing too special one way or the other, fairly low lighting and various Chinese glyphs and trappings abounded on the walls and menu. Our waiter was competent, but not great and it was one of those visits that when you leave, you feel satisfied you got your money's worth, but not much more than that and it wasn't overall memorable enough to bear repeated visits. You definitely can do a lot worse around town. The various Chinese restaurants, for whatever reason, don't seem to hold the same je ne sais quoi that the various Thai places here seem to enjoy and the experiences can be wildly variant from restaurant to restaurant.

So I was totally distraught when Evergreen closed... When I heard that Golden Phoenix was the reincarnate, I had to make it my first stop when making a trip home for the holidays. Even though it didn't taste exactly like Mrs. Tu's #7, it was pretty darn close. The atmosphere just wasn't the same, but I was happy to be able to still get my Evergreen fix.

Great service our waiter was a total sweetheart when we left we forgot our to-go . N he came running outside after us. The food is amazing!! Their tangerine chicken was cooked a way iv never had before it was amazing! A must try!

REVIEW FOR VEGANS: ask for an evergreen menu. I got the sesame soybean (fake chicken) and my spouse got the pon-pon soybean. The sesame soybean was not breaded, which was sad for me, but it was still very good. I ended up trading plates with my spouse and devoured the pon pon chicken. We were with another person who ordered meat off the normal menu, and enjoyed the vegan food we were eating much more than hers (though her food was still good!!!) I will be returning again and again for pon pon soybean. Holy wow. Cannot say enough good things about this place. Their high chairs do not have lap straps. That is the only thing I could think of that went wrong. Had my water glass refilled almost instantly when it was empty, very polite staff.

Amongst the plethora of different food options you can find on State Street, Golden Phoenix is one that is easily missed. I've really held out on writing a review for this place because I've never really had an experience that was particularly memorable here, nothing awful, nothing amazing, just okay to borderline good. The best thing I could probably say about Golden Phoenix is that they're fairly consistent and the atmosphere feels very traditional. I always see large families dining here, but the place is never packed to the brim. As far as I'm concerned, I don't think believe they offer dim sum, however, they do have an extensive menu. The only reason I ever come here is when I'm craving tangerine chicken, yes you heard correctly, tangerine, not orange. It's crispy, chicken-y, sweet, hot, and so far it's the only Chinese place in Utah that I trust for tangerine chicken, basically tastes the same as whenever I get it in Chinatown LA. P.S. they offer pretty cheap lunch specials if you want to get standard Chinese fare, but personally I'd risk the cleanliness and go for Little World down the street.

It had been awhile since my last visit here. And now I wish I had been coming here more often. They have the typical chinese cheap lunch combos. The food is good and the service is awesome. I will back for sure!

Although Golden Phoenix doesn't do much to distinguish itself from other Chinese restaurants in an outright and obvious manner, it's the little things that made our family's dinner visit into a memorable and fun experience. The staff was both EXTREMELY accommodating and beyond gracious - let's put it this way: we arrived at around 9:20 PM and the establishment was mere minutes away from closing from the night. Despite our unfortunate timing, the homie working the front of the house promptly sat us with a big smile and proceeded to provide some hilarious conversation ("Headed to Yellowstone? Ahhh eat, eat a lot....because the food there SUCKS!") while simultaneously suggesting the "Feast for Ten". Priced at around 115 dollars, the ten-person meal consisted of Chinese staples such as Walnut Shrimp and Crab and Egg Drop Soup. Portions were especially generous (the serving of fried chicken alone would've been enough to satisfy Adam Richman), and refills were taken care of promptly. Our dinner never felt rushed and my family's presence never felt unwelcome. In short, the Mormon generosity that sorta permeates throughout Salt Lake City also came through via its wonderful Chinese food! Good stuff.

To top off the really bad food, when we went to get into our vehicle and leave, the cook was outside around the side of the building washing his car with his cooking apron on! No wonder the food was horrible!

Decent portions, nice presentation, very much edible, but the supposedly lightly wok-fried vegetables were so oily and spicy I tried washing them several times in water to no effect on either oil or spice. Did not pass the "authenticity" test of my family visiting from China-- they said this was the worst place I'd found that Yelpers had recommended.

Since evergreen closed down ive been jonsing for some vegan chinese food. Turns out Golden Phoenix is now offering the very best of Mrs. Tu's menu! My best friend came from out of town and we decided to see how well they adopted Evergreens menu. We walk in to find two hallways. In the first section we see a sign that says Evergreens. A hostess came by and said are you here for evergreens? and we nodded confused. She lead us over to a table and explained that they have segregated this part of the resturaunt for the vegan customers and explained that all the vegan items were cooked on seperate surfaces. Conclusion: While some of the food tastes different than i remember it still tasted amazing. Definetly check it out if you want some great vegan chinese!

From the looks on the outside, this is a d-i-v-e. And the decor on the inside isn't the prettiest but man, oh man the food is delish! The service is great and the food is awesome.

After my last experience with Asian food (The horrifying Asian Potato) I was hesitant to venture out. And while Golden Phoenix was a step up from Potato, it clearly was nothing above your average Chinese food, and warranted my usual okay rating. First of all, this place is just divey. State Street is not where I would take anyone I am trying to impress, pawn shops being the norm. However, that doesn't truly matter if food is very good (Bangkok classic thai being an example) and yet Golden Phoenix just didn't redeem the cheesy decor and dark feeling. Handmade cream cheese wantons were a plus. Main dish (lo mien with beef) was edible and portion sizes were GENEROUS. They are not lacking there. And an entire vegan menu? Well that automatically ups the ante given my friend is a vegan and this makes for a satisfying meal for both of us. There's no defining factor. I want to have food that I remember later, that makes me want to come back. I didn't find that at Golden Phoenix. Perhaps there are better things on the menu, but I have yet to find them.

Really, really good Chinese food. Golden Phoenix is my favorite Chinese restaurant in Salt Lake City. I highly recommend their Peking Spare Ribs, Shrimp with Walnut Sauce, and their Tangerine Chicken. They also have an authentic Chinese menu for those who are more daring. The staff at Golden Phoenix are top notch and although the restaurant looks a little suspect from the street, it's warm and inviting on the inside. My father served a Mormon mission to Taiwan and has been to China / Hong Kong many times since. Golden Phoenix is his favorite restaurant in Salt Lake City.
